SUMMARY:SSD Model Averaging
DESCRIPTION:Virtual interactive tutorial with Professor David Fox (Free with purchase of online course “Introduction to Model Averaging and ssdtools in R”) \n\n\n\n\n\n\nInterested in model averaging? Want to know how model weights to apply and use model averaging with speciecs sensitivity distributions (SSDs)? Want to learn about SSD model fitting using ssdtools and the interactive\, online version – shiny(ssdtools)?Join Professor David Fox in this live\, interactive tutorial in which he walk you through the basics of fitting SSDs in R. Starting with the R package fitdistrplus\, you will be shown how to extract AIC values and other information from a fitted SSD and use those to compute the model weights for each component SSD. Using R\, you will be shown how to compute a model-averaged HCx value b y first writing your own code\, and then using the ssdtools package. Topics to be covered include: \n\n\n\n\ndealing with bimodality in SSDs\n\n\n\nusing fitdistrplus to fit SSDs \n\n\n\nconstructing a model-averaged SSD in R ‘by hand’\n\n\n\nhow to fit a mixture distribution (eg: 2 lognormal distributions or a lognormal and a logLogistic distribution) to bimodal data in R\n\n\n\nusing the ssdtools package\n\n\n\nusing shiny(ssdtools)

SUMMARY:Short Course - Model Averaging
DESCRIPTION:Get a head start on the latest developments in SSD modelling! \n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an essential course if you are a practising ecotoxicologist who has an interest in: \n\n\n\n\nconcentration-response (C-R) modelling\n\n\n\nspecies sensitivity distributions (SSDs)\n\n\n\nthe Burrlioz software\n\n\n\nssdtools software\n\n\n\nestablishing guideline values\n\n\n\njust learning about model averaging\n\n\n\n\nSpecial deal\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCourse DescriptionAlthough model averaging is not a new concept (it dates back to 1963)\, its application to SSD modelling certainly is. In this context\, model averaging (MA) is designed to help address a major conundrum in SSD modelling. And that is “what distribution do I use for the SSD?”. As noted by Fox and others\, unlike some other branches of science where there is either a ‘natural’ distribution or some theoretical basis to help guide the choice\, no such assistance is available in ecotoxicology. Coupled with this lack of guidance is the pathologically small sample sizes that we invariably use to fit SSDs and this results in the non-rejection of almost any plausible candidate distribution. This course will guide you through what can be a complex topic. We aim to do this in a natural\, intuitive way rather than by formal instruction (although there’s a bit of that!). Commencing with a review of why the process of averaging is so important for so much of what we do in science and progressing to measures of goodness-of-fit (GoF) and the introduction of information theoretic measures such as entropy; Kullback-Liebler information; and Akaike’s Information Criterion (AIC). These concepts will be introduced and discussed in the context of their application to SSD modelling and modelling more generally. We will use R in a ‘hands-on’ mode to perform some of the basic calculations using likelihood methods to obtain weights for comparing alternative SSD models. You will also be introduced to generalized linear models using R as well as tools to assess the adequacy of the fit. From there we move on to putting the theory into practice with an emphasis on ‘learning by doing’. Initially\, you will write your own functions in R to fit model-averaged SSDs and to use the fitted model to estimate HCx values. You will be shown ‘new’ techniques of developing and fitting mixture models to handle bimodal SSDs before finally moving on to the R package ssdtools and its on-line implementation shiny(ssdtools). \n\n\n\nSpecial deal for first 20 SETAC AU members to enrolEnroll in the online course Model Averaging and receive a 25% discount and free course notes. There is no expiration to your access to course content and so you can undertake the course at your own pace – work through the notes\, do the practice exercises\, and test your knowledge with interactive quizzes. For those interested in having an on-going involvement in Model Averaging and SSD modelling\, you can take out a student cloud subscription to access more advanced material\, tools\, and R code under the license ECOTOX.SCIENCE has with POSIT (formerly R Studio) for (USD)$5/month. This subscription will also allow you to write\, run and store your R files on the POSIT cloud server\, so you’ll always be in touch no matter where you are.
